An Open Door for
Victims of Domestic Violence

Characteristics of Abuse

Unlike a relationship based on nonviolence and equity, domestic violence is based on power and control. Abusers maintain their control through a complex set of abusive behaviors including emotional and psychological, economic, sexual, stalking, and physical abuse. A common abuse tactic is to invalidate the perceptions of the victim to the point that she herself doubts her own experiences. Even more common is the tactic of isolating the victim from friends, family, anyone who might offer perspective and validation.

The most important aspect of empowering victims of domestic violence is to validate their experience. Effective advocacy begins with listening to her story, believing her, and helping her acknowledge the injustice.
