An Open Door for
Victims of Domestic Violence

How can you help? By becoming informed, by volunteering, by donating "in-kind" materials and consumables. And most of all, by becoming a Friend of Grace Smith House with your tax-deductible cash contribution.

Donors will receive our twice-yearly newsletter and invitations to special events such as our annual Spring Brunch and Auction. The Donor Bill of Rights describes the high standards Grace Smith House upholds with regard to its donors and friends.

Becoming A Friends of Grace Smith House

Friends of Grace Smith House have provided thousands of dollars in support of the organization’s mission over the years. Their goals are:
To sustain the mission of Grace Smith House;
To provide financial support for all the organization’s programs;
To build a base of Friends throughout the Hudson Valley who have pledged to help end domestic violence in our community.

A few examples of what your contribution can do:

$5 enables a volunteer to transport a woman to court for a custody hearing;
$44 feeds the 30 women and children in our shelters for a day (supplemented by all the food donations we can get);
$130 supports for a week the work of our life skills counselor, who provides pre-employment training and prepares clients to support themselves and their children

Grace Smith House makes the most of every donation. Every cash contribution means an additional enhancement to the services we are able to provide for our families.

Volunteering

Grace Smith House depends heavily on volunteer support in all our programs. Volunteers may
find themselves shopping, cooking, cleaning, holding a baby while the mother cooks a meal,
answering the hotline, issuing supplies to shelter residents, moving belongings, accompanying women to the Department of Social Services, providing other types of advocacy, running errands, doing clerical tasks, all of the above and more.

Volunteers are required to complete 12 hours of training before they are assigned to a particular program. Volunteer training is conducted three times a year. Participants attend four 3-hour sessions which generally are scheduled on weekday evenings.

There are no limitations on who can apply to become a volunteer as long as you are at least 18 years old and have a commitment to nonviolence.

For more information about volunteer opportunities, call the Volunteer Coordinator at
845-471-3038 or email your inquiry to administrator@gracesmithhouse.org.
