Volunteers and interns are required to complete a 12 to 14 hour agency-run training before they can work in the shelter setting. Participants learn about domestic violence issues, shelter operations, advocacy, hotline calls, listening skills, and more.
Following the training, volunteers and interns generally may be assigned to work any time between 7 a.m. and 9 p.m. Monday through Friday. Schedules are based on (a) the days and times you feel you can be available, (b) the number of hours required for an internship, and especially (c) the operational needs of the shelter. Consider several different schedule alternatives as it may not always be possible to assign the exact time frame desired. Daytime hours, of course, are busiest and provide maximum opportunity for exposure to a variety of tasks. Evening hours are quieter but hold more opportunity for direct client interaction. A combination of both often provides the optimum learning experience. Trainings and orientation occurs three times per year during winter, spring, and fall. If you are interested in signing up for the training, fill out and return the Volunteer Application Form. You will be contacted when the training dates are finalized.
